Word for the day “We commemorate two legends”
We remember and commemorate two legends:
Last year, we lost two American legends of the civil rights movement died Friday, July 17th, 2020, a monumental loss for a nation still in social unrest with protests and demands for racial equality decades later. John Robert Lewis died at age 80 after a battle with cancer. Rev. Cordy Tindell "C.T." Vivian died at age 95 of natural causes. They died a day before the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela another legend and fighter of racial equality.
Both men demonstrated the divine message of "good trouble" I’ve heard all my life about the icon John Lewis' favorite saying and approach to confronting injustices without violence. They worked alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at the forefront of the historic struggle for racial justice in the 1960s. At the height of demands for justice, their beatings at the protests galvanized support that led to key changes.
After years of arrests, confrontations, and relentless pursuit for justice, they received the highest civilian honor from the nation's first Black President Obama. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed Lewis’ passing, calling him “one of the greatest heroes of American history.” Lewis was the last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. “All of us were humbled to call Congressman Lewis a colleague, and are heartbroken by his passing,” Pelosi said. “May his memory be an inspiration that moves us all to, in the face of injustice, make ‘good trouble, necessary trouble.”
We here at Grace and Truth leadership strongly believe that “Good Trouble can strengthen, and good trouble can reveal the work that needs to be done in us. Tears, I’ve discovered through experience, can clear the eye so that we see with an improved vision and perspective.” Grace and Truth leadership stands in solidarity with the men and women protesting against racial equality, police brutality, and against the killings of unarmed black women and men in a non-violent manner. We will continue to commit our nation, our communities, and our families in prayer during this time of social unrest and time of needed healing in our land!
