Word for the day: “Leadership succession.”

John 14:12 (NKJV) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”

 Great day Leaders,

Today’s message and insight remind some and challenge others of an especially critical aspect of leadership. Leaders add value to others, and leaders receive value from others. It’s a basic and fundamental component of leadership.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE: THOSE WHO GIVE VALUE AND THOSE WHO RECEIVE VALUE.

Influential leaders, mentors, and managers must empower others to fulfill any organization's purpose/assignment. Jesus invested time and passion in developing leaders. Only when they could properly manage the resources did Jesus empower them. When the teacher offers empowerment too early, it literally sets emerging leaders and followers up for failure.

On the other hand, a leader who fails to empower capable people creates frustration. Transformational empowerment, in my opinion, means engaging your followers to use the authority entrusted to them to fulfill their mission. Jesus imparted to his followers a balance of both concepts.

Peter was not ready for leadership before the crucifixion. Initially, he failed to use the empowerment given to him by Jesus. It required a failure or several failures in Peter’s life before he matured in his leadership.

LEADERSHIP WITHOUT SUCCESSION PLANNING IS NOT LEADERSHIP.

However, once Peter began to appropriate from Jesus what had been imparted to him, he became a powerful and effective leader. Jesus told his disciples they would be able to not only do what He had done, but they would do even greater things than He did.

Jesus prepared Peter for the leadership role He wanted him to advocate in His Church and society, and He challenged him in various trials and tribulations to codify his leadership attributes.

Jesus was intentional about taking Peter away to an isolated place to teach him the content and context of leadership/headship. Jesus affirmed Simon Peter a Rock, and on this Rock, He will build his Church, and what he binds on earth will be considered bound in heaven (Matthew 16:18-19).

It is a manifestation of Christ’s importance to Peter, whom he had entrusted to head His Church. Peter did not disappoint Jesus by taking a decisive leadership role as head of the Church.

 POINT TO PONDER

Succession is a key attribute of a transformational leader who endeavors to empower leaders to advance their purpose/assignment. Prayerfully and thoughtfully, we must prepare and entrust those assigned for leadership to advance the mission and message of our ministries and marketplace organizations.
