Happy Mothers Day!
When I was a child, I can't remember if I ever dreamed of being a mother. Did I want children? probably not!Growing up my mother worked really hard to support our family. She was a registered nurse, who worked really long hours.As a child, I never really appreciated her gift of being a mother until I became a mother myself. Even though she worked hard, she loved hard as well.We never wanted for anything and had the best of everything. The gift of having children and being a mother made her a very giving and kind person. She would give you the shirt off her back. (my mother passed away in 1992)When I was pregnant with my first child, I was so excited, to say the least. Wow! a baby, who me? As I got closer to my delivery date I could not imagine what type of mother I would be.I was scared to death! I had no idea what I was doing. But it was too late and I was going to have to wing it! (that's a whole other story)
Pain that surpasses all understanding
When I went into labor, that is when I thought becoming a mother had to be a curse. The amount of pain was incredible! searing pain, gut-wrenching pain. (you get the picture) I prayed several times for God to get this evil thing out of me!And vowed to never ever get pregnant again. Did I mention I did this two more times?You cannot ever explain to another woman what the pain of childbirth feels like. It's a kinda have to be there and experience it feeling. Just talking about it makes me cringe.
The beauty of childbirth!
Don't get me wrong. Childbirth is the most beautiful thing in this world. But I was not ready for the pain of giving birth!And why I decided to give birth naturally, without pain medication, not once but three-times is beyond me.
But the moment that I saw that beautiful little face appear, I had forgotten the pain and fell in love with this little life that God had given me to take care of.The love I felt for this child was like none other. I knew right then and there, I would die for this child. Being a mother is one of my greatest accomplishment.
Gods greatest gift
It was the greatest gift that God could have given me. It came with a lot of hiccups along the way. I didn't always do everything right (there is no handbook) I made many mistakes along the way.Being a mother showed me a lot of things. It taught me a lot of things as well.You learn patience, (to the tenth power) you develop the ability not to kill your children. (this is a very special ability)Most importantly, you learn to love without limits and conditions. And no matter what your children say, or do, or how they may disappoint you. Your love for them never waivers.When they mess up and need forgiveness you are there to forgive over and over, because you know they are not perfect.
Conclusion
Motherhood is the gift that keeps on giving. Just as the gift of Christ is. There is no depth nor height that would keep you from protecting your child. So as it is with God.Motherhood is in the likeness of God. How we have the ability to give life, how we love and nurture our children, how we forgive when they are wrong, how we chastise them and give correction, how we guide them throughout life.All these qualities are a carbon copy of our father. This is what makes Motherhood the greatest gift!Happy Mothers Day to all of the Mothers out there.
