Luke 22: 39 (NKJV) Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[e]If you are like most people, you like being in control. We most times want things to happen according to our wishes and according to our timetable. But most times, God has other plans. And God always has the final say. Oswald Chambers correctly observed, “Our Lord never asks us to decide for Him; He asks us to yield to Him—a very different matter.” These words remind us that even when we cannot understand the workings of God, we must trust the Lord and accept His will.All of us experience adversity and pain. As human beings with limited comprehension, we can never fully understand the will of our God in heaven. But as believers in a benevolent God, we must always trust the Lord’s Divine providence. When Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, as described in Luke 22, He poured out His heart to God. Jesus knew of the agony that He was destined to endure, but He also knew that God’s will must be done. We, like our Savior, face trials that bring fear and trembling to the very fabric of our souls, but like Jesus, we too must ultimately seek God’s will, not our own.Are you bitter by a personal tragedy that you did not deserve and cannot understand? If so, it’s time to make peace with life. It’s time to forgive others, and, if necessary, to forgive yourself. It’s time to accept the unchangeable past, to embrace the priceless present, and to have faith in the promise of tomorrow. It’s time to trust God completely. And it’s time to reclaim the peace, the Lord’s peace, it can and should be yours. Acceptance means learning to trust God more. Today, think of at least one aspect of your life that you were reluctant to accept, and then prayerfully ask God to help you trust Him more by accepting the past.
